While speaking to MSNBC, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who supports Vice President Kamala Harris, criticized Ohio Senator J.D. Vance for his stance on women's reproductive rights. Beshear stated, "J.D. Vance calls pregnancy resulting from rape ‘inconvenient’. Inconvenience is traffic!" He went on to say, "Make him go through this!"
Vance reacted strongly to these comments, condemning Beshear on X (formerly Twitter). He expressed his outrage by asking, "What the hell is this? Why is [Andy Beshear] wishing that a member of my family would get raped?!?"
The Trump-Vance team labeled the comments as offensive. Vance’s spokesperson, William Martin, commented, "After speaking on the DNC main stage last night, Harris campaign surrogate Governor Andy Beshear went on national television this morning and explicitly called for a member of Senator Vance’s family to be raped. His comments are disgusting, vile, and should not be tolerated in American politics." They demanded a prompt disavowal from Harris, emphasizing that such extreme statements have no place in political dialogue.
Later in the day, Beshear returned to MSNBC and addressed the criticism, calling it a "deflection." He argued, "He’s trying to make himself the victim. As a man, J.D. Vance will never have to face any of this personally. But it’s sad that he lacks the empathy to be able to put himself in a different position.”
Abortion has been a major topic at the Democratic national convention in Chicago, where Trump and Vance are accused of seeking a national ban on the procedure. Amidst this heated debate, Planned Parenthood has even stationed a bus outside the convention center, offering free abortions and vasectomies, with heavy demand reported throughout the week.
In the broader context of U.S. policy, Trump, who served as president between 2017-2021 and is currently campaigning for a second term, has voiced that abortion regulation should be determined state by state. This aligns with the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, removing the federal protection for abortion that had been established in 1973.
Governor Beshear, who has led Kentucky since 2019 and was also considered a potential vice-presidential candidate alongside Harris, continues to be a significant voice in the Democratic Party’s advocacy for reproductive rights. Harris ultimately selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate after Democrats encouraged President Joe Biden not to seek reelection last month.
