US and UK strike Yemen consecutively for two days – media
US fighter jet downed as result, with military claiming incident was case of friendly fire

US and UK forces have carried out renewed airstrikes in Yemen’s Hudaydah province and the capital, Sanaa, according to the Houthi-affiliated Sabaa channel on Sunday. This military action follows claims by Houthi forces that they targeted the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman with drones.

Official confirmation of the Sunday attack has not been provided by either Washington or London.

The Houthis assert that their actions led to the downing of an F/A-18 Super Hornet, which they claim was in response to prior airstrikes conducted by US and UK forces on Sanaa on Saturday evening.

Military spokesman Yahya Saree stated that the attack “has been thwarted through a strategic military operation targeting” the USS Harry S. Truman and several accompanying destroyers. Saree previously claimed that the operation involved the use of eight cruise missiles and 17 drones.

In contrast, the US Central Command has disputed this claim, attributing the loss of the aircraft to a “friendly fire” incident involving the USS Gettysburg. An investigation is currently being conducted to clarify the situation surrounding the incident.

According to CENTCOM, US forces executed airstrikes on a “missile storage facility and a command-and-control center” controlled by the Houthis on Saturday. They also successfully intercepted several unmanned aerial vehicles and an anti-ship cruise missile over the Red Sea.

The Houthis, a Shia Islamist group that has a significant presence in Yemen, have been targeting Israel-linked commercial vessels in the Red Sea since October of the previous year in retaliation for Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

Following Israel's declaration of war on Hamas in Gaza, the Yemeni group has launched missiles or drones at more than 80 merchant ships. This surge in activity came after a series of attacks by Hamas into Israeli territory. Initially focused on vessels associated with Israel, the Houthis broadened their operations to include US and UK ships after Anglo-American airstrikes in January.

Additionally, the Houthis have targeted Western naval vessels in the region and claim to have launched missiles directly at Israel multiple times, framing their actions as a demonstration of solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
