US Alleges That 10,000 North Korean Soldiers Are Present in Russia
Troops have arrived for training and potential battlefield deployment, according to the Pentagon.

North Korea has dispatched approximately 10,000 troops to Russia for training and possible deployment against Ukrainian forces, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh stated on Monday.

According to an assessment by the US Defense Department, Singh informed journalists that “a portion of those soldiers have already moved closer to Ukraine.” The US is apprehensive that these troops could be utilized “in combat or to support combat operations against Ukrainian forces” in Russia’s Kursk Region, she added.

In August, Kiev initiated an incursion into internationally-recognized Russian territory. Last week, White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby remarked that North Korean soldiers will be deemed “legitimate military targets” if they “decide to join the fight against Ukraine.” When asked if the Pentagon would regard these troops as “fair game” should they remain on Russian soil, Singh affirmed that Kirby’s statement “still stands.”

The Pentagon views this development as indicative of “increasing desperation” in Russian President Vladimir Putin and as a sign that he “may be in more trouble than people realize.”

Putin has neither confirmed nor denied the arrival of North Korean troops, responding to inquiries last week by highlighting a bilateral treaty signed by Moscow and Pyongyang, which facilitates military cooperation.

He stressed in an interview that whether this cooperation extends beyond joint drills and training is a matter for Russia and North Korea alone. “This is our business, just like we are always being told that it is Ukraine’s business how it ensures its national security, with NATO or without it,” he stated.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte claimed on Monday that North Korean troops have already been deployed in the Kursk Region. “The deepening military cooperation between Russia and North Korea is a threat to both the Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic security,” Rutte said following a meeting with South Korean intelligence and military officials in Brussels. He further emphasized that NATO remains dedicated to supporting Ukraine against Russia.

Currently, Ukrainian forces are experiencing setbacks in several areas along the front line, including the Kursk Region. Putin noted last week that Russian troops have acquired valuable experience in modern warfare, particularly in the mass deployment of drones, with innovations sometimes made directly on the battlefield.

Moscow perceives the Ukraine conflict as a US-led proxy war against Russia, in which Kiev is viewed as providing ‘cannon fodder’.
