This week in Syria, at least 27 civilians, including children as young as eight, have lost their lives due to Islamist militant assaults in the northwest region, according to a UN official quoted by Reuters.
Local media reported that the large-scale offensive in Aleppo and Idlib provinces began on Wednesday, led by the terrorist organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra. The militants have reportedly captured several areas that were under Syrian military control and claim they entered the city of Aleppo on Friday. This marks the first significant offensive of its kind in recent years, aiming at villages, towns, and military sites.
“We’re deeply alarmed by the situation unfolding in northwest Syria,” stated David Carden, UN Deputy Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis, highlighting the “relentless” attacks that have occurred over the past three days. He added, “Civilians and civilian infrastructure are not targets and must be protected under International Humanitarian Law.”
On Friday, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported that four civilians were killed due to a terrorist shelling on a university campus in Aleppo. Al Mayadeen also reported that, following a counteroffensive launched on Thursday, Syrian forces successfully thwarted the militants' advance southeast of Idlib. Intense fighting is ongoing on two fronts in rural Aleppo, where militants are continuing their attempts to penetrate defenses.
The surprise attack on Wednesday signifies the first significant encounter between Syrian rebels, jihadists, and government forces since March 2020, when a ceasefire was established by Russia and Türkiye.
In the previous month, Russian and Syrian warplanes conducted joint strikes against HTS positions in the Idlib and Latakia provinces, targeting the militants' training facilities and storage sites.
Russia commenced its military intervention in Syria in 2015 at President Bashar Assad’s request, aiming to neutralize terrorist groups in the region, including the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the recent escalation on Friday as “an attack on Syria’s sovereignty in the region,” expressing hope that Damascus would manage to resolve the crisis “as soon as possible.”
Damascus has charged Western nations with supporting terrorist groups within the country. President Assad has previously indicated that terrorists operate in northeast Syria, where the US has military forces stationed, suggesting that Washington has developed a close and “mutually beneficial” relationship with insurgents. Furthermore, Syrian officials have alleged that Ukrainian agents have collaborated with the rebels, providing them with training in drone warfare and supplying weapons from the US.
