Trump to contest updated charges related to Capitol Hill riot
Former US President Donald Trump is set to plead not guilty to criminal charges that claim he tried to reverse the outcome of the 2020 election. This case is connected to the events of January 6, 2021, when a group of Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol Building following his election loss.

In a recent court document, Trump, who is again running for president, stated he would not attend the reading of the charges and had instructed his lawyers “to enter a plea of not guilty” on his behalf “to each and every count of the superseding indictment.” This court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.

The charges laid out in the updated indictment remain the same as those Trump faced last year, to which he also entered a plea of not guilty in August 2023.

Trump faces allegations of conspiracy to defraud the US, conspiracy against the voting rights of citizens, and obstruction of congressional certification of the election.

Changes have been made to the indictment following a ruling by the US Supreme Court that Trump has broad immunity for actions undertaken during his presidency. As a result, some previous claims have been omitted or altered in the new indictment.

Trump has consistently refuted these accusations, criticizing the legal action against him as an unjust barrier to his political comeback. He recently expressed his views on Truth Social, describing the proceedings as “a direct assault on democracy” and “a resurrection of a dead witch hunt.”
