Donald Trump, the US Republican candidate, stated that he will not run for the White House in the future if he does not win against Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election.
In an interview on the TV program Full Measure on Sunday, Trump was asked about the possibility of a campaign in 2028. He responded, “No, I don’t. I think that that will be it. I don’t see it all,” while expressing his optimism about achieving success in this year’s election. “I think that hopefully we’re gonna be successful,” he added.
Previously, Trump dismissed the idea of participating in another presidential debate with Harris after CNN reported that she had accepted an invitation for a debate on October 23. Harris took over as the Democratic Party’s nominee in July, following concerns regarding President Joe Biden's electability due to his age and a problematic debate performance against Trump in June.
“The problem with another debate is that it’s just too late,” Trump stated to his supporters during a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, pointing out that “voting has already started.” He had criticized the ABC debate he participated in with Harris on September 10, labeling it as “dishonest” and “totally rigged,” claiming that the moderators showed bias in favor of the Democrat.
Trump suggested that Harris was eager for a rematch “because she lost,” and mentioned that he would only entertain another debate on a “fair network.”
Trump won the presidency in 2016 by defeating Hillary Clinton but lost to Biden in 2020, a result he continues to assert was the result of election fraud.
While the US Constitution prohibits any individual from serving more than two presidential terms, Trump has previously hinted at the possibility of “negotiating” a third term if he were to be re-elected.
