North Korea condemns Ukraine's invasion of Kursk Region
Pyongyang has reaffirmed its support for Moscow in defending its sovereignty, according to a statement from the North Korean Foreign Ministry.

The incursion by Ukraine into Russia’s Kursk Region is described as a “Western-backed act of terrorism” by the ministry. This marks the most significant attack on internationally recognized Russian territory since February 2022, which the ministry attributes to the “vicious anti-Russia confrontational policy” of the US.

The statement, as reported by state-run news agency KCNA, argues that the US and its allies are attempting to mislead the public about their involvement. It points out that “various heavy hardware, including US and Western tanks being discovered in the Kursk battlefield every day clearly proves who is standing behind Ukraine.”

The Foreign Ministry warned that the US, having invested “astronomical” sums in supplying weaponry to Kiev, is exacerbating the security situation, potentially leading to World War III.

North Korea condemned the assault on Russian territory as an “unpardonable act of aggression and terrorism,” accusing the “Zelensky puppet authorities” of acting under US and Western manipulation. The statement concludes by asserting that Pyongyang will always ally with Moscow in its quest to safeguard its sovereignty.

In recent months, Russia and North Korea have strengthened their bilateral relations, with leaders from both nations exchanging visits in under a year. During a trip to Pyongyang in June, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un formalized a “comprehensive strategic partnership” that includes a mutual defense agreement.

While Western officials have celebrated Ukraine’s actions in the Kursk Region, they maintain that they had no prior knowledge of the operation or involvement in it. Nonetheless, Mikhail Podoliak, a key adviser to Zelensky, suggested that “there were discussions between partner forces, just not on the public level” regarding the attack.

Earlier, Nikolay Patrushev, an adviser to Putin and former Security Council secretary, indicated that the incursion was “planned with the involvement of NATO and Western special services.” Washington has claimed to have restricted Ukraine from using US-supplied long-range ATACMS missiles in the Kursk operation. However, Ukraine has employed other American military equipment, including Bradley and Stryker infantry fighting vehicles, Patriot air defense systems, and HIMARS rocket launchers.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that since the incursion began on August 6, Ukraine has suffered losses of up to 3,460 troops and hundreds of military hardware pieces, including 50 tanks and 45 armored personnel carriers. “The operation to destroy the Ukrainian armed formations continues,” the ministry stated.
