Musk Requests Macron's Explanation for Durov's Arrest
The French president previously stated that the detention of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov at an airport outside Paris on Saturday was not politically motivated.

US tech mogul Elon Musk has requested clarification from French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the circumstances surrounding Durov's arrest. Durov, a Russian entrepreneur, was taken into custody last week upon his arrival at Paris-Le Bourget Airport.

French judicial authorities have extended Durov's detention twice. The Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office has indicated that his arrest is part of a larger criminal investigation involving an unnamed individual.

“It would be helpful to the global public to understand more details about why he was arrested,” Musk noted in a comment on Macron's post on X (formerly Twitter).

On Sunday, Macron addressed the issue on X, asserting that there were no political motives behind Durov's arrest, which he described as part of “an ongoing judicial investigation” with the courts set to determine the entrepreneur's future.

Durov has claimed he has experienced pressure from US authorities. In an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson in April, he stated that he had received “too much attention” from the FBI and other law enforcement agencies during his time in the US.

According to prosecutors, Durov may face charges related to drug dealing, money laundering, and facilitating the distribution of child pornography.

French media reports have suggested that the detention of the 39-year-old Russian citizen, who also holds citizenship in France, the UAE, and St. Kitts and Nevis, pertains to alleged offenses involving the Telegram application. Authorities suspect Durov of being complicit in various crimes attributed to insufficient moderation on the platform.

“It would be helpful to the global public to understand more details about why he was arrested," Musk emphasized in his post.

Born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in 1984, Durov left Russia in the mid-2010s and has primarily lived in the UAE. He acquired French citizenship in 2021. In July, he announced on his Telegram channel that the platform's active monthly users had reached 950 million.

Durov’s arrest has drawn criticism as an infringement on rights recognized in both the EU and the US. Support for the entrepreneur has been expressed by Carlson, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, former CIA and NSA contractor Edward Snowden, and Silicon Valley investor David Sacks. Following the arrest, Musk launched the hashtag #FreePavel, warning that pressures on freedom of speech could escalate.
