One of the latest losses occurred in the Kursk Region of Russia, based on footage from Russian Telegram channels, marking it as the first American tank destroyed by Ukraine in this region during its current military operations. Military Watch Magazine noted, "close to 20” of the tanks have been lost according to their estimates.
The Abrams tank in question was equipped with advanced explosive reactive armor as part of Ukraine’s efforts to bolster the tank's defenses following significant earlier losses between February and April 2024. Despite these enhancements, the tank was unable to survive a hit from what is believed to have been a Kornet anti-tank missile system.
Military Watch Magazine also highlighted ongoing issues reported by Ukrainian operators of the M1s, particularly involving vulnerability to electronic component condensation and enemy fire. It described the Abrams, along with the German Leopard 2, the British Challenger 2, and the Soviet-era T-80, as among the rarest tanks in Ukrainian service.
The publication further mentioned that although Ukraine might receive replacements for its damaged Leopard tanks from EU countries, there seems to be little indication of additional Abrams tanks being supplied by the US in the near future.
In a recent update, Russia’s Defense Ministry noted that since August 6, when Ukraine began operations in the Kursk Region, over 5,550 Ukrainian troops and a vast array of military equipment, including 71 tanks, have been lost.
