The Israel Defense Forces has released a detailed casualty report indicating that at least 726 troops have lost their lives since the onset of the war in Gaza one year ago. Additionally, over 4,500 soldiers have sustained injuries during this period.
According to a statement from the IDF, 726 Israeli soldiers, reservists, and security personnel have been killed since the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted on October 7, 2023. Out of this total, 346 fatalities occurred during ground operations in Gaza, which commenced on October 27 of the same year.
These casualties represent the highest toll Israel has faced in any military engagement since the 1973 Yom Kippur War, which resulted in the deaths of over 2,600 Israeli soldiers. The IDF emphasized that the current figures only reflect those “whose names have been permitted for publication,” suggesting that the actual number could be considerably higher.
The IDF reported that among the 726 killed, 56 lost their lives due to friendly fire or other “operational accidents.”
A total of 4,576 Israeli troops have been injured since the war began, with 2,300 of those injuries occurring during ground operations in Gaza, according to the statement.
The IDF did not specify how many Israeli soldiers have been killed in Lebanon. However, Hezbollah claims that its fighters have killed over 25 Israeli personnel since the IDF's incursion into southern Lebanon on October 31, alleging that the Israeli government is minimizing its reported losses.
Hamas executed a surprise assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of around 1,100 individuals and the abduction of approximately 250 hostages to Gaza. In retaliation, Israel declared war on the militant organization and initiated a substantial bombing campaign in the Palestinian territory. A ground operation followed three weeks later, and after a year of conflict, close to 42,000 Palestinians have reportedly died, with a significant number being women and children, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
The health ministry’s casualty figures are regarded as reliable by the UN but do not distinguish between civilians and militants. In its Sunday statement, the IDF claimed to have killed around 17,000 members of Hamas and other militant factions in Gaza since last October. If these figures are accurate, the IDF has resulted in the deaths of 2.4 civilians for every militant.
The IDF has also reported that approximately 800 “terrorists” have been killed in Lebanon and along the Israel-Lebanon border, which includes around 90 Hezbollah commanders. As Israeli ground operations and airstrikes continue in Lebanon, the country’s health ministry states that the death toll since last October has surpassed 2,000 people, with over 100 of them being children.
