IOC Announces: Boxing Secures Place in 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games Program
Boxing received official approval for its inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics on Thursday, thanks to a unanimous vote from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This decision puts to rest years of uncertainty regarding the sport's status at the Games.

Last month, the IOC provided provisional recognition to the newly formed governing body, World Boxing, marking a significant advancement toward boxing's participation in the LA Games. The decision made during the 144th IOC Session guarantees the sport's ongoing presence at the Olympics.

"I thank you for the approval of having boxing back. We can look forward to a great boxing tournament," stated IOC President Thomas Bach.

In 2024, the boxing events at the Paris Games will be overseen by the IOC, following the withdrawal of recognition from the International Boxing Association (IBA) in 2023 due to its failure to implement necessary governance and financial reforms. Initially, boxing was not included in the 2028 program, prompting the IOC to encourage national federations to establish a new global governing body to replace the IBA.

World Boxing, which now comprises over 80 national federations, was established in 2023.

"This is a great day for boxers, boxing, and everyone connected with our sport at every level across the world," remarked World Boxing President Boris van der Vorst. "This outcome has been achieved by a massive team effort... and would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of all of the national federations, boxers, coaches, officials, and boxing leaders that have worked together to enable this to happen."

"World Boxing understands that being part of the Olympic Games is a privilege, and not a right, and we are determined to be a trustworthy and reliable partner that will adhere to and uphold the values of the Olympic Movement," he continued.

The IOC has specified that only athletes whose national federations were members of World Boxing at the start of the qualification events for the 2028 Summer Olympics will be eligible to compete in Los Angeles.
