Haley Stevens Targets Vacant Michigan Senate Seat
The centrist Democrat stands out as a formidable candidate; however, she is not the sole individual contemplating the newly vacant position.

The four-term centrist congresswoman is giving serious thought to a campaign to succeed retiring Sen. Gary Peters and is getting closer to making a decision, as per sources familiar with her plans who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions.
Stevens has expanded her staff, possibly to form a future campaign team, although she has yet to reach a final decision, according to those acquainted with her intentions. However, her candidacy would position her as a strong contender with significant fundraising capabilities. Elected in 2018, she successfully flipped a GOP-held battleground district. Following redistricting, she faced fellow Democratic Rep. Andy Levin in a member-on-member contest, which she won decisively, despite Levin's connections to a prominent Michigan political family.
Nevertheless, she is not without competition from other notable Democratic candidates considering a run.
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is also pondering a bid. His fundraising abilities could potentially help him gain traction in the primary, though some Democrats have privately noted that his recent relocation to Michigan and the liberal stances he took during the 2020 presidential primary might pose challenges in a general election.
In addition, state Sen. Mallory McMorrow has expressed her intention to run to Michigan Democrats.
On the Republican side, the state—having previously supported Trump—is seen as a prime opportunity for pickup, especially after former GOP Rep. Mike Rogers narrowly lost to Democrat Elissa Slotkin last fall. Rogers is also contemplating a run this time around.
During Stevens’ 2022 campaign against Levin, AIPAC was actively involved in supporting her. This cycle, she is also chairing the political arm of the centrist New Democrat Coalition.
