In a televised interview on ZDF, Scholz expressed his thoughts on the matter: “I believe that now is the time to discuss how to arrive at peace from this state of war, indeed at a faster pace.”
Initially hesitant to provide extensive military support to Ukraine, Germany, under Scholz's leadership, has since become a major supporter, supplying the Ukrainian forces with military equipment including Leopard 1 and 2 tanks, and Marder infantry fighting vehicles.
This push for peace comes while Scholz faces various challenges at home. A ZDF poll revealed a significant dip in his popularity, with 77% of participants viewing him as a weak leader and only 17% approving of his leadership skills.
Additionally, the poll highlighted Scholz's low approval ratings throughout his term, with 74% of those surveyed suggesting he should not lead the Social Democratic party in the next federal election scheduled for September 2025.
Scholz's coalition experienced significant losses in recent regional elections in Thuringia and Saxony. These setbacks were compounded by the rise of the right-wing Alternative for Germany and the new left-wing Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, both of which oppose Germany's continued involvement in the Ukraine conflict, mass immigration, and the economic difficulties attributed to Scholz's administration.
