FBI probes maggot episode at Democratic convention
Authorities in Chicago are currently investigating an unusual stunt involving several women who scattered maggots on a breakfast table during the Democratic National Convention earlier this week. The Chicago police and the FBI are looking into the incident, believing that the individuals aimed to convey a political message through their actions.

The four-day convention concluded on Thursday night, with Vice President Kamala Harris accepting the party’s nomination for the upcoming presidential election on November 5.

Reports from multiple U.S. media outlets state that the incident with the maggots occurred at the Fairmont Hotel, where delegates from Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Missouri, and South Dakota were gathered.

According to WGN-TV, law enforcement officials reported that “multiple unknown female offenders are alleged to have entered a building… and began placing unknown objects onto tables containing food. The offenders are believed to have then left the area.”

The extent to which delegates may have consumed food before the maggots were discovered remains unclear, but authorities noted that “one victim was treated and released on-scene.”

An FBI evidence response team was observed outside the hotel on Wednesday morning, and, as of now, no arrests have been made related to the incident.

Indiana delegate Bryan Lilienkamp mentioned to reporters that he was “running a few minutes late, so I didn’t see what happened, but those who I spoke to said the hotel staff responded extremely quickly. They cleared everything out and brought out new food,” he said.

Haley Robles, a spokeswoman for the Fairmont Hotel, confirmed to WGN-TV that “a group of individuals caused a disruption at a DNC-related breakfast event at our hotel this morning.” She further added that “our team acted immediately to clean and sanitize the area, ensuring that the event could continue without further incident.”

In response to the stunt, Indiana Democratic Party spokesperson Sam Barloga remarked that “all Americans have the right to peaceful protest, but ugly attacks like this have no place in our democracy.”

Additionally, on Monday, pro-Palestine protesters clashed with police outside the DNC venue, tearing down a section of the metal security fence. They called for President Joe Biden’s administration to cut military aid to Israel and to urge the Israeli government to halt its military operations against Hamas in Gaza. Several individuals were detained during this altercation.
