Beijing Preparing a 3,000 Square Kilometer Zone for Autonomous Driving Demonstrations
Beijing is set to establish a 3,000-square-kilometer autonomous driving demonstration zone located between the fourth and sixth ring roads, which will represent nearly 20% of the total land area of Beijing Municipality, as reported by Xinhua News Agency, citing information from the World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference held in the city on Saturday.

The city has finalized the installation of intelligent roadside facilities within this high-level autonomous driving demonstration zone, which was initially envisioned as a 600 square kilometer area in 2020, according to the website of the Beijing economic-technological development area.

This demonstration zone has attracted prominent companies such as Baidu, Pony.ai, WeRide, Neolix, and JD.com, enabling extensive demonstrations and collaborative development across eight application scenarios. These scenarios include smart connected passenger vehicles, unmanned delivery, autonomous patrols, trunk logistics, and automated sanitation.

So far, the zone has issued road testing licenses to 33 testing companies and nearly 900 vehicles. The autonomous driving testing mileage has surpassed 32 million kilometers, which constitutes more than a quarter of the total in the country.

Moreover, automated shuttle testing has commenced at several key locations, including Beijing Daxing International Airport, Beijing South Station, and Yizhuang Station. In addition, the Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu Expressway now fully accommodates autonomous trunk logistics scenarios.

Beijing is also working on the legislation of regulations concerning autonomous vehicles, as noted by Xinhua.
