The outgoing president has awarded the Medal of Freedom to 19 prominent individuals.

US President Joe Biden has announced the recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. Among the 19 honorees are former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, liberal billionaire George Soros, and culinary innovator José Andrés, who is known for posing for a photo with the individual who attempted to assassinate then-President-elect Donald Trump.

The awards ceremony took place at the White House on Saturday. This prestigious honor recognizes individuals for their “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors,” as stated by the White House.

Soros, a 94-year-old philanthropist who has invested billions in supporting liberal democracy in Eastern Europe, was honored for his dedication to “strengthen democracy, human rights, education, and social justice” via his Open Society Foundations and various “partners and projects in more than 120 countries.” Soros did not attend the event, and his son, Alex Soros, accepted the award in his place.
