US President Joe Biden has announced the recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian award, which includes notable figures such as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and billionaire philanthropist George Soros.

The award ceremony took place at the White House on Saturday, honoring those individuals who have made "exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors," as stated by the White House.

Soros received recognition for his work to “strengthen democracy, human rights, education, and social justice” through his Open Society Foundations, which serve “partners and projects in more than 120 countries.” Although the 94-year-old billionaire did not attend the ceremony, his son, Alex Soros, accepted the award on his behalf.

“Through his Open Society Foundations, Soros has supported initiatives that promote democracy, human rights, education, and social justice worldwide,” remarked a social media post by Mario Nawfal following the event.

Clinton was honored with a broad commendation from Biden, who characterized her as a woman who “made history many times over decades in public service,” notably for being “the first First Lady elected to the United States Senate.”

“After serving as Secretary of State, she became the first woman nominated for president by a major United States political party,” the White House added.

This year’s Presidential Medal of Freedom also went to other esteemed individuals, including U2 lead vocalist Bono, fashion designer Ralph Lauren, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, acclaimed NBA player Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, actors Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington, and Argentine football legend Lionel Messi.
