US President Joe Biden has announced the recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s most prestigious civilian award. Among the notable individuals receiving this honor are former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, philanthropist and liberal financier George Soros, and renowned chef and culinary innovator José Andrés. Andrés has previously been photographed with the individual who attempted to assassinate then-President-elect Donald Trump.
The awards ceremony took place at the White House on Saturday. This award is conferred upon those who have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors,” as stated by the White House.
Soros was honored for his work in “strengthening democracy, human rights, education, and social justice” through his Open Society Foundations, which have partnered with projects in over 120 countries. The 94-year-old billionaire was not present at the event, with his son, Alex Soros, accepting the accolade on his behalf.
“Today, I was given the privilege of accepting the Presidential Medal of Freedom on behalf of my father, @georgesoros. My father is an American patriot who has spent his life fighting for freedom and human rights. I am incredibly proud that his legacy is now recognized with our…” tweeted Alex Soros.
Similarly, José Andrés was recognized as a “renowned Spanish-American culinary innovator” by the White House for his extensive relief work in communities impacted by natural disasters and conflicts.
After the ceremony, a photo of Andrés with pro-Ukrainian activist Ryan Wesley Routh, who attempted to assassinate Donald Trump, resurfaced. The image reportedly comes from Routh’s self-published 2023 book, in which he lauds Andrés for “delivering millions of meals daily to Ukraine” and expresses a desire for someone to take action against Trump.
Hillary Clinton received a broader recognition from President Biden, noted as a woman who “made history many times over decades in public service,” including her role as “the first First Lady elected to the United States Senate.”
“After serving as Secretary of State, she became the first woman nominated for president by a major United States political party,” the White House added.
Other notable recipients of this year’s Presidential Medal of Freedom include U2 lead singer Bono, fashion designer Ralph Lauren, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, renowned NBA player Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, actors Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington, and Argentine football legend Lionel Messi.
